Corporate rumors have been known to cause extremely damaging crises that can endure for decades. Rumors can happen to any organization---large or small---and can die out, only to resurface months or even years after their initiation. They can ruin the reputation of a once-admired organization, inflaming consumers, provoking boycotts, and wasting millions and millions of dollars. Clearly, rumors can pose a serious threat to business.

But rumor-driven crises can be dealt with. Although there exists no "magic bullet" to combat rumors, there are strategies that may be employed to hasten their demise, or prevent them altogether. This paper discusses these strategies, and provides the public relations practitioner with an understanding of the sociological explanations for the existence and pervasiveness of rumors---a necessity if they are to be successfully combated. In addition, a two-page primer for dealing with rumors has been developed.
