Minimum transport velocity (MTV) is one of the criteria for designing local exhaust ventilation system (LEVs). The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists' (ACGIH) "Industrial Ventilation: A Manual of Recommended Practice" (2001) recommends minimum transport velocities in the range from 5.0 to 23.0 m/s (1000 to 4500 ft/m) for various industrial operations. The original source of these recommended numbers is not known.

This investigation has discovered only one industrial ventilation literature source for this information, i.e., the research of Dalla Valle published in 1932. His research produced equations for the determination of horizontal and vertical MTV; they are about 4 to 5 times lower than the recommendations of ACGIH.

This study measured MTV for three particle types: wood charcoal, sand, and Staurolite (DuPont foundry sand). The particle sample was generated in a ventilation system comprised of a 150-mm diameter straight duct 4.25 m in length, and a fan with a frequency inverter to adjust the velocity. The average air velocity was determined by Pitot tube. It was carefully increased until no particle deposition occurred on the duct bottom. This air velocity was defined as a MTV. The experimental results revealed that: (1) wood charcoal with a 75 to 2000 mum diameter required 3.6 to 5.0 m/s for horizontal MTV and 1.5 to 6.8 m/s for vertical MTV; (2) sand with a 75 to 2000 mum diameter required 3.7 to 7.8 m/s for horizontal MTV and 0.6 to 10.5 m/s for vertical MTV and (3) Staurolite with a 75 to 425 mum diameter required 3.9 to 5.6 m/s for horizontal and 1.0 to 6.2 m/s for vertical MTV. This study discovered that particles used in the experiments required a MTV 2.5 to 4 times lower than ACGIH's recommendations.
