In Arkansas, rice (Oryza sativa L.) grown utilizing stale seedbed tillage systems and soft red winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) that has been infested with annual bluegrass ( Poa annua) have exhibited reduced growth associated with nitrogen deficiency. The first study was conducted to assess the mechanism by which the bluegrass was affecting N uptake efficiency in winter wheat. Wheat and wheat infested with bluegrass was planted in micro-plots and fertilized with urea and ammonium sulfate (2 atom% 15N) at four rates in a 50/50 split application. Ammonia volatilization was measured for 21 days following each N fertilizer application. When wheat and bluegrass were grown separately, 13% of the applied N was lost via NH3 volatilization from wheat compared to only 3% when applied to annual bluegrass. Uptake of fertilizer N by annual bluegrass was 70% compared to 50% for winter wheat. When wheat was grown in the presence of bluegrass, NH3 volatilization from applied urea ranged between 3 to 4% compared to 5 to 6% for wheat that was free of bluegrass. Significantly less fertilizer N was accumulated by wheat that was infested with bluegrass regardless of N source utilized. When bluegrass was present grain yields for wheat were reduced significantly. Thus, N uptake efficiency in winter wheat was influenced most by competition from the annual bluegrass for fertilizer N, not by aggravating NH3 volatilization losses.

Very little research has been conducted on the impact NH3 volatilization has on fertilizer N uptake and grain yield for rice when the flood can not be applied in a timely manner and no research has been conducted to determine the impact conservation tillage has on NH3 volatilization loss. Field studies were conducted in 2000 and 2001 on both a clay and silt loam soil utilizing both stale-seedbed and conventional tillage practices. Urea and ammonium sulfate (2 atom % 15N) were applied 14-DPF and urea 1-DPF at four rates. Ammonia volatilization was measured for 21 days (14 days prior to flooding until 7 days after flood establishment). During 2000, there were no significant differences between tillage practices, however NH3 volatilization was greatest on the silt loam soil (22%) compared to the clay soil (17%) when urea was applied 14-DPF. In 2001, NH 3 volatilization of urea-N applied to stale-seedbed rice (32%) was significantly greater compared to conventional-till rice (24%) on the silt loam soil. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
