Aphelininae are usually parasites of Homoptera, and many species in the subfamily, such as Aphelinus, Aphytis and Eretmocerus, have been used in biological control. Four new genera (including seven new species) are described and a key to the genera of Aphelininae is provided. A total of 54 species in 21 genera (including 4 outgroup genera) were coded for 50 morphological characters, which were used in parsimony analyses to discover relationships between tribes in Aphelininae and the boundaries of recognized genera. Parsimony analysis supported the monophyly of Aphelininae with eight synapomorphic characters. All genera in the analysis, with the exception of one genus, were supported as monophyletic. In morphological analyses, the four tribes of Aphelininae were not clearly monophyletic because of the unusual placement of Marietta and Hirtaphelinus. However, in the combined analysis of morphology and molecules (28S-D2 + 28S-D3 + COI + COII), all of the tribes and genera were supported as monophyletic. Eretmocerini was supported as monophyletic based on 14 synapomorphic characters, and placed basal to the rest of Aphelininae; however, the placement of Eretmocerini is considered tentative because of the lack of an extensive number of outgroups. Aphelinini was monophyletic based on six synapomorphic characters in the combined analysis. Eutrichosomellini was monophyletic and comprised five genera (including two new genera) in the morphological analysis, but in the combined analysis Eutrichosomellini embraced three more genera (including two new genera). On a morphological basis, placement of this new clade in Eutrichosomellini was not expected; however, molecular analyses and combined analyses strongly supported their affinity to the Eutrichosomella clade based on high statistical values, sensitivity analyses, and three different analytical methods.

The species groups of Aphytis were investigated using 50 terminal taxa and five gene regions (28S-D2 + 28S-D3 + ITS2 + COI + COII, 2499 n.t.), including Marietta and Centrodora as outgroup taxa. Five out of six species groups were included in the analyses. The Chilensis species group was basal to rest of the Aphytis species groups. The Chrysomphali species group was paraphyletic. The Proclia and Lingnanensis species groups were monophyletic sister groups.
