520 $a The study developed a preliminary questionnaire, based on a literature search, and distributed it to 200 CEOs from private organizations in greater Washington, D.C. who were randomly selected from a "40+" mailing list. "40+" is an association that helps its members, who are forty years of age and older, search for jobs. Responses were received form 71 CEOs, which is 35.5% of the population.
520 $a Data obtained from the responses were used to compare pre-existing HRD activities with those currently practiced. The activities involve: acting as a resource on aging issues, improving skills and knowledge, addressing retirement choices, participating in policy decisions, and counseling. The data identified methods, such as: participation in general employee programs, statistical measures, research, liaison with other departments, record updates, consultation, and specific programs.
520 $a Data analysis explained why some activities are not currently practiced. Reasons include deficiencies in the following areas: identified need, priority placed upon older workers. HRD involvement in aging issues, and HRD departments. The findings showed that the following activities are generally available within existing programs: training to extend worklives, retirement and employment options, skill upgrades, and specific hiring, retention and promotion programs.
