Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of California, Berkeley, 2004.
Economists have studied the impact of various aspects of human capital on economic performance, but for the most part have neglected consideration of emotional and social competencies such as adaptability, stress management, and interpersonal adeptness. In this dissertation, I examine the impact of these competencies on economic performance and, specifically, investigate whether higher emotional and social competence (ESC) is associated with higher productivity. My analysis uses a data set comprised of operational indicators of productivity and ESC test scores, together with other data for US Air Force recruiters. A psychometric instrument, the BarOn Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i), was used to evaluate the emotional and social competencies of the recruiters. The EQ-i's ability to provide an accurate and detailed assessment of these specific competencies constitutes a major improvement over data that were previously available to researchers in economics. The results of my data analysis indicate that high levels of emotional and social competence are associated with high levels of productivity. While almost all of the fifteen competencies measured by the EQ-i display a positive and statistically significant relationship with productivity, their effects on productivity varied a great deal in magnitude. Although in this dissertation I do not establish the direction of causality between the emotional and social competencies studied and productivity, I do explore some indications from both this data and other sources that such competencies do in fact promote performance. In light of the findings from my analysis, I explore the topic of malleability of ESC and the effects of education in promoting its development. I examine related evidence and demonstrate that emotional and social competencies are malleable and can be improved at various stages in life. The findings of this dissertation provide an empirical justification for expanding the concept of productive human capital to include emotional and social competencies. I conclude the dissertation by discussing the potential for future research to extend my analysis and by stressing the potential of recent psychometric innovations within psychology for becoming an important part of economic research.
