Thesis (M.A.)--University of Louisville, 2004.
This thesis is an examination of Chaucer's interest in identity as it is evidenced in his work The Legend of Good Women. It begins with a discussion of Lynn Staley's study of Chaucer's attention to identity in the Canterbury Tales, in which she cites many instances of characters developing an awareness of selfhood. However, where Staley argues that this development of self-awareness does not culminate in the characters' experiencing a break from their traditional framework, this thesis argues that there is definitive proof otherwise in The Legend of Good Women. The latter part of the thesis deals with Chaucer's retelling of the stories of famous classical women such as Cleopatra and Medea and others; in his retelling he acknowledges the life-altering choices the women make which are based on the self-realization they gain through experience. Additionally, aspects that contribute to Chaucer's interest in identity such as personal identity, identity and authority, and performative identity are addressed throughout the thesis.
