Thesis (Ph.D.)--Indiana University of Pennsylvania, 2004.
This study focuses on Beckett's life and texts and questions the effect of trauma, laughter, tears, and writing to determine if the personal traumas in Beckett's life, increased by cultural and historical crises, are key to his work as well as his life. Beckett's concept of the risus pursus---the laugh which laughs at that which is unhappy---was crucial to the study in that Beckett himself recognized the blurring between tears and laughter and the importance of both in life. This dissertation begins by examining Beckett's life and highlighting personal traumas and crises as welt as referring to cultural and historical crises (such as World War II) that would also have affected Beckett. Then the focus turns to Beckett's texts and examines instances of trauma within them as well as focusing especially upon autobiographical references and allusions. There are many personal connections between Beckett and his texts; both explicit and more oblique references to his life and experiences are made. This dissertation provides a suggestion and thesis for this, arguing that the close relation was extremely important for Beckett, his "healing" and his work.

This work comes to the conclusion that trauma is an important part of life, and as such people must deal with it. Through his mix of tears and laughter, Beckett presents us with a healthy way of dealing with trauma, enough so that we can carry on with our lives. Beckett himself becomes an example of how to deal with trauma and to utilize it, as Beckett purged himself through his writing. While trauma (and tears) and writing are valuable tools, so too is laughter, which both frees us from our situation and returns us to ourselves, providing us with insight into both ourselves, others, life, and the world around us.
