Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 1995.
This dissertation concentrates on Korean working class women's political and cultural negotiation in the context of both the South Korean labor movement of the late 1980s and the ever-evolving international division of labor. I use an in-depth case study of a labor dispute in a U.S.-owned multinational corporation to examine how women workers contest their position in society and create their own discourse, practices, and identity.Subjects--Topical Terms:

By locating these workers' own narratives in the cultural and historical context of Korean society, this work combines a substantial understanding of indigenous Korean labor politics in a global labor conflict in which gender, class, and national identity intricately intersect. This work thus focuses on the following issues: (1) the ways in which gender and class identities are embedded in the Korean labor movement and the unveiling of historical conditions that shape or hinder women's labor activism or politicization; (2) the significance of multinational corporations as the site of "border-crossing" experiences which creates multiple, diverging perspectives between contesting groups.

I find these women's resistance unique in that they actively reclaim their marginality as a source of new critical thinking and imagination. Thus, these women workers' "back-talking" against the domination of nation, class, and gender reveals a new consciousness of political resistance in the late 20th century globalized world.
