This thesis studied an alternative secondary sewage treatment system called a vegetative submerged bed or a plant rock filter. The study area was located in Harrison County, Mississippi. Twenty-two sites were chosen for observation. Only 17 of those sites had their wastewater analyzed.

This study found the vegetative submerged beds were not initially built well, as 27% exhibited pooling or backflow (septate flowing over the head of the system). Typically, they were not maintained after installation, as 54% had <70% vegetative cover and 31% showed structural damage.

This study found qualitative and quantitative data only agreed on the best and worst vegetative submerged beds. Only one vegetative submerged bed met USEPA guidelines and that was probably due to structural problems not the performance of the vegetative submerged bed.
