The ecology of ponds, marshes and meadows, otherwise known as wetlands, has been of growing interest to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and microbiologists since the 1980's. The research and studies over the years have proven that wetlands are an economical alternative in wastewater treatment since they are simple to construct and operate.

Currently the application of wetlands is a very new and growing field in wastewater management that is still in its early stage. The concept of wetlands is most feasible in small developing communities where there is plenty of inexpensive land to accommodate a wetland, and where the municipality cannot afford the costs for construction and operation of extravagant wastewater treatment plants, while high quality effluent is desirable.

The method and technology considered optimum from this study is applied in a constructed wetland design for Calapan, the capital of Oriental Mindoro located in the lower-northern region of the Philippines. The design and application of the constructed wetland in this case focuses on removal of organic, inorganic and hazardous pollutants from industrial, agricultural and domestic wastewater.
