Using National Basketball Association team and player data from 1950 to 2000, empirical analysis reveals that the level of consumer discrimination against black players, as measured by attendance, has decreased over time when controlling for relevant factors. However, the general trend has been interrupted during times of high unemployment rates showing that the level of consumer discrimination present in professional basketball is punctuated by the business cycle. Beginning in the late 1980s and continuing until the mid 1990s, consumer discrimination against black basketball players disappeared. However, following the owner-imposed lockout of 1998, there was a backlash by fans against black players matching the level of consumer discrimination found in the 1960s. The results suggest that the level of consumer discrimination is tied to economic processes and is not exogenous to the production process when production occurs as it does in professional basketball.

Traditionally, economists who examine the National Basketball Association test for owner response to consumer discrimination through wage gaps in favor of white players. However, empirical analysis reveals a relatively new strategy practiced by owners responding to the discriminating tastes of fans, which consists of retaining white players with a greater likelihood than equally productive black players. Moreover, the magnitude of the retention gap in favor of white players coincides with the level of consumer discrimination found in the same time period.
