Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Akron, 2003.
The objective of this study is the rheological analysis of the complex flows of polymer melts. The following topics will be discussed: (1) Analysis of Steady Helical Flow; (2) Quasi-1D Modeling of Steady Contraction Flows; (3) Die Swelling in Short die; (4) Effects of Non-Isothermality in Contraction Flow. Throughout this work, the same set of constitutive equations (CE's) were applied consistently to analyze the available standard experimental data as a preliminary study, which made it possible to find material parameters in the calculations.

The non-linear effects of the steady helical flows are of interest to industry. When a polymer flow is developed between two co-axial cylinders in both the angular and axial directions, one flow type influences the other by enhancing the shear-thinning effect of the polymer flow. Using an orthogonal transformation, the helical flow can be reduced to simple shearing. Complete helical flow profiles with given gross characteristics are found from the non-Newtonian viscosity of a testing material. Also, the non-isothermal effects and the energy consumption are considered to estimate the optimal conditions for the processing.

Another complex flow is the flow with an abrupt contraction between two consecutive axi-symmetric channels of different cross-sectional areas. In the transitional region of polymer flow in the composite channel geometry, the dominant flow characteristics change their type from the typical Poiseuille flow to an inhomogeneous extensional flow, which is sometimes accompanied by vortices at the entrance corners.

The "direct computations" usually fail at relatively small De numbers (in comparison to the real polymer processing operations), and this computational failure is highly dependent on the type of CE. The presented quasi-1D steady model is ideally suited to resolving these difficulties. In this model, the whole flow region is divided into naturally introduced sub-regions with well-known and highly simplified types of flow. Thus, the model analyzes the entire flow region in a simplified geometric manner with properly matched conditions between adjacent sub-regions. In addition, the swelling problem in the short die and the non-isothermal effect are easily included in the model.
