This study of the underlying processes contributing to poor bimanual coordination of children with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) had four objectives. They were to investigate: (1) simple coupling and coupling advantage when the two hands execute the same movement; (2) decoupling, when the two hands engage in different movements; (3) motor control of the non-dominant hand; and, (4) motor development of bimanual coordination.

Methods. Sixteen 10-year-old and sixteen 12-year-old children with DCD (identified by the Movement ABC test) were matched to an equal number of children for age, handedness, IQ, and gender. There were four index finger tapping conditions, two of which tested coupling and two tested decoupling. All conditions contained short and long intervals, thus creating rhythms more complex than steady tapping. The independent variables were group (2), age (2), condition (4), and hand (2). The long and short intervals were analyzed separately. Mean tapping rate and the coefficient of variation (CV) (standard deviation/mean) were the dependent variables.

Results. A simple coupling effect was observed---the means of the hands in the bimanual condition were closer than in the unimanual condition. Statistical analysis of the CV did not result in a significant simple coupling or a bimanual advantage. Graphically simple coupling was observed in the groups with DCD. Graphically, bimanual advantage was observed in the long intervals in both hands of the controls and in the dominant hand of the groups with DCD.

The DCD groups executed the decoupling task at a significantly slower rate. The long intervals in the coupling conditions and the short intervals in the decoupling conditions distinguished between the subjects with DCD and the control subjects.

The motor control of both hands of the DCD was different not just the non-dominant hand. The non-leading hand of the groups with DCD was not as tightly coupled to the leading hand as in the controls.

The development of bimanual coordination in the DCD groups appeared to be different than the controls.

$a
Conclusion. It appears that children with DCD have more difficulty with coupling their two sides, with inhibiting, and with motor control of both hands. Possible site of deficit is the corpus callosum.
