Thesis (M.S.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2004.
The focus of this research investigated the perceptions of female athletes regarding their own bodies in relation to participation within individual versus team sports at the college level. Two hundred female athletes from local colleges and universities were selected on the basis of their participation in soccer (n = 17), basketball (n = 24), softball (n = 53), tennis (n = 9), volleyball (n = 34), gymnastics (n = 19), swimming (n = 19), water polo (n = 4), track and field (n = 16), or cross-country (n = 5). All athletes were given the Body Esteem Scale (Franzoi & Shields, 1984) and the Body Image Questionnaire (Ruddy, Nieman, & Johnson, 1993). It was hypothesized that team sport athletes would have a higher satisfaction (BES) and a higher, more positive evaluation (BIQ) of their bodies than the individual sport athletes. Results showed no significant difference between team versus individual sport athletes when it came to either evaluation or satisfaction of body image.
