The first step in moving toward providing culturally competent care to diverse populations in the 21st century is to recognize the importance of increasing the number of minority nurses in the United States. This qualitative, phenomenological study investigated the influences of caring behaviors and cultural influences as factors that may affect the retention of African-American nursing students enrolled in baccalaureate nursing degree programs. Leininger (1991, 1992, 1994a, 1994b, 1994c, 1996, 1997) provided the framework for this investigation. A sample of sixteen African-American registered nurses participated in a semi-structured interview session. A discussion guide of eight questions was utilized to facilitate the dialogue. The analysis of the participants' responses utilizing Denzin's Interpretative Interactionism Theory (1989) demonstrated the relationship of caring behaviors and cultural influences as influential factors which yielded a positive impact towards the retention of these participants during their course of study in nursing. Caring behaviors and cultural influences can be provided in different way to minority students through role modeling, mentoring, and other learned socialization processes. When applied consistently by faculty who are responsible for the cultivation of fertile learning environments, minority nursing students can achieve competence in their roles and effectively implement caring constructs and cultural influences to those they serve.
