The two studies in this dissertation were conducted to further our understanding of mobility related disability in community-dwelling older adults. Study one was conducted to validate five performance tests and assess their ability to distinguish community-dwelling older adults with and without mobility-related disability. Two hundred and five older adults, aged 60 years or more were recruited. The five tests consisted of functional reach (FR), timed five step-ups test, timed 50-foot walk, timed five-minute walk endurance, and a timed floor transfer. Subjects' mobility disability status (able and disabled) was determined by a self-report measure. The results indicated that all five tests were valid measures. Using only two tests, the five-minute walk and timed five step-ups, 81% of our subjects were accurately classified into able and disabled groups. The diagnostic cutoff values for the five-minute walk and the timed five step-ups test were reported for clinical decision-making.

520 $a Study two was designed to systematically examine the strength/function relationship in a group of community-dwelling older adults who had a history of falling. Forty-two subjects were recruited for this study. Five lower extremity muscle groups were studied: hip flexors (HF), hip abductors (HA), knee extensors (KE), ankle dorsiflexors (AD), and ankle plantar flexors (calf). The strength values of HF, HA, KE, and AD were measured by a Nicholas hand-held dynamometer (HHD) and the calf muscle performance was measured by its heel-rise ability (the number of repetitions of heel rising the subject could perform at a frequency of 1 Hz). The subjects' mobility functions were measured by the five-minute walk endurance and timed five step-ups tests because these two tests could best distinguish people with and without mobility-related disability from the previous study. Each muscle strength value was linearly related to both functional tests with the highest correlation with both tasks occurring with calf muscle performance (r = .62--.71) and lowest correlation occurring with KE (r = .32--.35). Among these five muscles groups tested, the calf muscle was the only single predictor for both tasks, based on the stepwise multiple regression analysis. Future study is warranted to test the effectiveness of intervention targeting the calf muscle group in maintaining or regaining walking endurance and step-up capacity.
