This research employed a qualitative methodology to study the finance committees of Southern Baptist churches in Hawaii. The specific methodological approach used was grounded theory. This investigation interviews used, the analysis of committee documents, and observations to gather data and to construct a theory on how these organizational structures function. The analysis of data generated schematic categories that later served as the main pillars of an emergent theory: the Theory of Finance Committee Work. Finance committees execute three main functions: (a) budgeting, (b) financial management, and (c) stewardship. The results and conclusions of the research were evaluated according to the concept of trustworthiness. Evaluative approaches such as member checks, triangulation, and peer debriefing were employed to judge the goodness of the findings.
