Thesis (M.S.)--Mississippi State University, 2004.
Residents ages 16--24 had low angling participation. Few catfish anglers fished at State lakes. The majority of anglers spent less than half of their trips at State lakes. Factor analysis identified OUTDOOR RELAXATION, ACCOMPLISHMENT, FAMILY EXPERIENCE, and CATCH as important fishing motivations. Factor analysis identified CLEAN SAFE ENVIRONMENT, CATCHING FISH, and NUMBER AND SIZE OF FISH CAUGHT as important site-selection criteria. ACCOMPLISHMENT and NUMBER AND SIZE OF FISH CAUGHT were important among frequent anglers and CATCHING FISH was important among infrequent anglers. Moderate correlations existed between fishing motivation and site-selection factors. Lack of time was the most important barrier to fishing. Lack of time and lack of awareness were the most important constraints to fishing at State lakes. Though encouragement by personnel increased participation, catch card response remained low. Publicizing angling opportunities available at State lakes and encouraging angler involvement will aid any efforts to enhance use of State lakes.Subjects--Topical Terms:
