Thesis (M.S.)--Utah State University, 2004.
The U.S. Forest Service volunteer program seeks to provide opportunities sought by citizens and increase public understanding of the national forests. This thesis examines the agency's success at achieving these goals at the Uinta National Forest in central Utah, examining motivations for volunteering, satisfaction with experiences, and change in knowledge of the national forests. Analysis of pre- and post-visit surveys found that altruistic reasons for volunteering were most important, followed by motives to enjoy leisure activities. Participants reported high levels of overall satisfaction, but satisfaction was higher with supervision and self-rated ability than with tasks assigned and advance information. Respondents knew more about the national forests after volunteering than before, but even afterward had low levels of knowledge about some questions. Barely more than half said they had wanted to learn while volunteering.Subjects--Topical Terms:
