Larval and juvenile northern pike (Esox lucius) were studied in artificial and natural spawning wetlands, adjacent deepwater areas, and with arena experiments, to determine efficacy of artificial wetlands as spawning and nursery areas and to determine proximal causes for emigration from spawning wetlands. Laboratory studies were also conducted with juvenile northern pike to determine habitat preferences after emigration from spawning wetlands.

Mean peak density of larval northern pike was greater in artificial wetlands (22.9 pike/m2) than in natural wetlands (11.6 pike/m 2) and larvae were larger in artificial wetlands than in natural wetlands. Differences in vegetation and hydrology between natural and artificial wetlands may explain differences in larval northern pike density and size.

Initial emigration from artificial spawning wetlands began soon after hatching, at sizes as small as 14 mm total length. Emigrating northern pike were larger than northern pike remaining in wetlands, indicating that emigration occurs due to some ontogenetic change and not due to intraspecific aggression. Observations in spawning wetlands and arenas also suggested that emigration was caused by ontogenetic change.

Juvenile northern pike stayed in deeper parts of both natural and artificial spawning wetlands and in the creek connecting spawning wetlands to the main lake until reaching lengths of 50 mm or greater, indicating that transitional habitats are important. Juvenile northern pike in flumes showed no preference for any water velocity tested and did not use cover patches either with or without a predator present. Juvenile northern pike were most often observed near the was of flumes indicating that edge is important. Field collections of juvenile northern pike indicated that they prefer undercut banks with cover in the form of tree roots or heavy overgrowth of terrestrial grasses.
