This dissertation studies the poetry of the Argentinean authors Juan Gelman (1930) and Luisa Futoransky (1939) as lyric explorations of subjectivity and verbal representations of a subject conditioned by the experience of exile, loss and cultural uprooting. The literary works of these two poets link displacement and translation underlining the relations between the body, geography and writing.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapter one is devoted to Gelman's conception of translation focusing, first, on a series of poems (laments) presented as previously translated texts written by an imaginary Sidney West, and, secondly, on a lyric sequence written in Sephardic and translated by the author into contemporary Spanish. I argue that translation---perceived by Gelman as a hermeneutic process and as an act of recontextualization---is a method of foreignizing the "mother tongue" as well as a liminal experience of language.

Gelman's poetry connects the experience of exile not merely to displacement and loss of country, but as well to the violent death of loved ones. Chapter two is an analysis of poems in which the body is represented as a political space marked by experiences of torture, disappearance and death and an exploration of ethics and autobiography as they relate to the lyric genre.

A dispersed geography in the poetic production of Luisa Futoransky creates a nomadic poetic gaze and bespeaks of a displacement that encroaches on the memory of her poetic subject. Chapter three is an analysis of poems in which Futoransky's lyric subject experiences urban spaces. It is also a reflection on travel as displacement and urban practices as they relate to culture, history and politics. Chapter four explores the relationship between prose and poetry in Futoransky's "Cronicas" (Chronicles).

The dissertation shows how these exemplary texts construct alternative geographical representations triggered by contemporary experiences of displacement, physical suffering and death. The study of the body of work produced by these two writers should have an impact on scholarship in a larger literary field participating of the same cultural and political realities.
