More than one hundred twenty years has passed since the Gospel was delivered to the unreached Korean people. Korean church had made remarkable church growth under God's grace from the mid-1960s to the mid-1990s. However, Korean church had experienced both stagnation and decline of church growth rate during the last 10 years (the mid-1990s to 2005).

This research was made to know the causal relationship between the stagnation/decline of the Korean church growth and the issue bok (blessing) one of the central themes of the Korean worldview from the missiological perspective. In particular, this research had ethno-historical, biblical survey as well as practical field research in order to learn how the biblical teaching of bok helps Korean Christians mature and overcome kibok sinang (a faith that seeks for earthly blessing first of all).

Korean culture is a culture of bok and Koreans have strong shamanistic sentiment to seek first material blessing. Koreans were drawn into the Korean churches by evangelism and sermons that emphasized, "Jesu midko bok badeuseyo (Believe in Jesus and receive blessing)." Those people who discovered that God is the source of all blessings and His presence as the eternal blessing, have kept their seats in the church and their position in the Lord, but those who failed to discover this true blessing began wandering intra- and inter-religiously. The direct reason why they failed to discover the true blessing in Christianity, the religion of blessing, is because church leaders have neglected to proclaim the true life and true blessings God desires to bestow on human beings. Instead, they taught that the amount of material blessing measures true Christian faith in order to keep people in the church.

This dissertation expounds on the true blessing of the Kingdom of God, and the biblical understanding of blessing provides Christian maturity and qualitative church growth that will bring new term of quantitative growth to the Korean church.

Emphasis on traditional concept of blessing drew the heart of people but could not maintain the people in the church in the past. The best method to maintain them and disciple them as mature Christians is totally depended on how fast the church leaders transform from their traditional concept of blessing to the biblical concept. When church leaders help them to discover that God is the true blessing, the stage of kibok sinang that manipulates God to get material blessing will transform into maturity and they will become obedient to God's will and purpose. When believers experience Christian maturity, the image of Korean Protestant church will transform to become imitators of Jesus Christ.
