Thesis (M.A.)--University of Central Missouri, 2006.
This thesis is an American historiographical study of Christopher Columbus. It begins with an analysis of the problematic primary sources on Columbus. Following this is a discussion of the major American works on the Admiral, featuring an analysis of the respective biographers' background, potential inhibitors to their objectivity, and their conclusions about Columbus as a mariner and an administrator. The final section looks at Columbus's portrayal in movies and the news media. The conclusion of the analysis is that America's early lionization of Columbus traces in large part to historical scholarship. However, the current popular disaffection with Columbus probably has little to do with specific historical works; Columbus's late downfall seems to mark a general, modern disenchantment with western civilization itself. Columbus, championed long ago as a symbolic American manifestation of western civilization, now suffers ill judgment along with that civilization today.Subjects--Topical Terms:
