This dissertation examines late medieval religious instruction materials together with sixteenth-century English husbandry manuals to determine how they provided a "teaching program" that produced independent learners who had the competencies needed to encounter new ideas about religious reforms and to incorporate new religious beliefs and practices into their daily lives. Specifically, I focus on John Fitzherbert's Book of Husbandry, first printed in 1523, and the numerous editions that appeared throughout the 1500s, which coupled advice about farming with religious instruction. The Book of Husbandry contains echoes of earlier didactic texts, and later revisions reflect contemporary changes in doctrine.

To do this, I first look at the classical and Anglo-Norman husbandry manuals and at the modes of vernacular religious instruction, such as sermon manuals, pastoralia, and visual guides. I also offer an overview of English agricultural practices and conditions of land tenure, then show how the language of agriculture permeated late medieval religious rites and rituals. A close reading of the 1523 Book of Husbandry reveals how Fitzherbert used older religious works as intertexts for his own writing, for Fitzherbert's selective appropriation of religious texts suggests how a lay individual might have learned about new religious ideas. A microhistory approach to analyzing the subsequent editions of Fitzherbert's manual, printed between 1534 and 1598, shows how the religious content of the book evolved as doctrine was imposed or reinstated during the reign of the Tudors.

The 1523 edition of the Book of Husbandry is a valuable text to consider for enhancing our understanding of the English Reformation. This popular work, which offered instruction in both husbandry and doctrine, shows how laity could have learned about new religious ideas for themselves, for the efficacy of late medieval didactic texts resulted in competent, autonomous learners. That lay folk learned their lesson is implicit in the changing religious content of the later editions of the Book of Husbandry. This popular how-to literature responded to changes in the readers' beliefs, showing the degree to which the English Reformation played out in the lives of everyday folk.
