Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of California, Los Angeles, 2006.
Educating leaders for a pluralistic democracy is the stated goal of many contemporary colleges and universities. However, the lack of students of color in significant leadership roles on predominately white campuses makes this goal elusive. This action research project addressed the lack of student of color leadership participation at California Lutheran University. The study uncovered student perceptions of personal and institutional barriers responsible for the under-representation of students of color in student government, peer advisor, and resident assistant positions. Analysis of the survey responses of 371 sophomores and seniors, interviews with administrators who have oversight over these positions, analysis of documents, and a focus group dispelled erroneous beliefs that students of color were disinterested in leadership, were ignorant of the benefits of leadership, or had too many other commitments to become involved. The study revealed a flawed system of advocacy and sponsorship that discouraged students of color from seeking positions and severely disadvantaged students of color who did apply. The resulting strategy to increase student of color leadership representation was the work of a campus team and can serve as a model for other campuses struggling with issues of access, equity, and educational excellence.Subjects--Topical Terms:
