Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2006.
The purpose of this thesis is to examine and compare the idiom of Afro-Cuban mambo as it originated and evolved in Cuba and was later appropriated in the United States. The origins of both the dance and instrumental forms of mambo are explored from its roots in the Yoruba culture of West Africa to the evolution of the dance in Cuba, and finally the popularization of the dance in the U.S. The primary focus of this paper is the commercialization of the mambo in New York during the 1950s, and the reactions of audiences, the media, and the American music industry. Performers and composers of mambo are discussed for their contributions that aided in advancing the form, and emphasis is placed on the comparison between authentic Cuban mambo and the New York version that appeared during the peak of "mambomania."
