We aim to study association between educational changes occurred in Venezuela and social mobility. For this purpose, we used the Cultural Determinants of Poverty Survey, undertook by the Institute of Social and Economic Research, Universidad Catolica Andres. Although its purpose was not to measure social mobility, it provides information of respondent's and his parents's education and occupation in a nationwide sample.Subjects--Topical Terms:

We begin with an exposition of the theoretical argument among different perspectives on social classes and stratification, and the main conceptions of association between education and inequality, showing Latin-American and Venezuelan perspectives.

We continue by exposing the main economic and demographic changes occurred in Venezuela along the 20th Century. We focus on labor market and educational system and its impact on population. This is the context for our following analysis of social mobility.

After addressing methodological concerns about the survey and the application of Goldthorpe's class schema, in the third part we present and discuss our findings. First, social mobility estimates and its trends among birth cohorts, sex and urbanization levels. We found high social mobility, but with variations: greater mobility in urban environments and in birth cohorts which took advantage of the massification process in education.

Later we test the association between education and social mobility. First, we focus on the effect of origin class and education context on educational attainment. Afterwards, association between educational attainment and respondent's occupation.

Association between education and mobility we approach in several ways. First, studying mobility indicators according to education level, then by testing the meritocratic selection model with log linear analysis, and finally by a multiple correspondence analysis. This analysis takes into account influence of variables: sex, birth cohort, urbanization level, school and occupation sector. Results show that upward mobility relates to education increases in education level, to high school education and working in public sector. College education relates, instead, to stability in non manual occupations across generations and to enrollment in private elementary schools. Superior education appears not as a channel for upward mobility, but more as a way by which middle and upper classes maintain their own advantage positions.
