Thesis (M.A.)--Sarah Lawrence College, 2007.
This thesis focuses on Charlotte Bronte's last novel Villette and uses this novel to illuminate an historical moment. Further it is an exploration of how Bronte expressed her ideas via her fiction, and how these ideas related to her position in society. It analyzes the relationship between the Victorian attitudes towards women writers and Bronte's experience as a female author. It extends a conversation with scholars such as Elaine Showalter, and particularly seeks to interrogate her idea of a female literature that seeks autonomous self-expression. It also engages with how Bronte's work refutes Victorian conventional views of women that defined women as angelic beings who could not feel passion, anger, ambition or self-reliance. By doing so, this thesis engages with the way self-awareness of the writer translates into literary form in Bronte's era, and by doing so offers a fuller study of this aspect of Showalter's book. More specifically it shows ways in which Bronte's experimental style in Villette breaks new ground in the novel's history by putting forth a powerful female subjectivity.Subjects--Topical Terms:
