The importance of gold has long been noted in Beowulf studies, but gold is only one of the critical media of exchange that circulate in the poem's world. As an analysis of anthropological work on gift exchange shows, the operative rules of exchange and circulation shape the ethical behaviors that in turn shape identity. The construction of heroic identity in Beowulf is largely dependent on the conception of and resistance to the poem's monstrous bodies, which serve to embody those actions, values, and desires that violate the normative rules of exchange and reciprocity. Beowulf, however, rather than unproblematically occupying the binary position of Hero, embodies the ambivalence and uncertainty embedded in a culture where relationships are shaped by hospitality and reciprocity. An analysis of the poem's portrayal of permeable and unstable bodies illustrates the ways in which the monster is the disavowed but very close kin of the ambivalent hero.Subjects--Topical Terms:
