This study investigated the refining of a scoring manual for reliably measuring aesthetic development in adolescents and adults. The development of an aesthetic scoring manual served two purposes: it was a tool to reliably teach raters how to make accurate judgments about coding aesthetic responses; and it helped to clarify and refine the clinical descriptions of aesthetic types by providing a source book of responses which precisely catalogue aesthetic remarks.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This study investigated the refining of a scoring manual for reliably measuring aesthetic development in adolescents and adults. The development of an aesthetic scoring manual served two purposes: it was a tool to reliably teach raters how to make accurate judgments about coding aesthetic responses; and it helped to clarify and refine the clinical descriptions of aesthetic types by providing a source book of responses which precisely catalogue aesthetic remarks.

A sampling of 90 subjects was randomly drawn from three different age populations: high school students, college students, and adults. Each group was equally represented by naive and sophisticated art viewers.

The subjects took part in a two-part study. Part one consisted of a questionnaire formed around issues of age, schooling, work, and aesthetic exposure. Part two was an open-ended aesthetic interview. The subject was presented three different reproductions of works of art from which he selected his most and least favorite. The reproductions then became the focus for a stream-of-consciousness talking exercise in which the viewer talked out loud about what he was looking at, thinking about, and responding to in the print.

The interviews became the basis for a data analysis which involved a split sample design. One half of the sample of interviews were coded and used to create an improved scoring manual. Raters using the new manual were reliably trained to code the second half of the sample of interviews. The coded interviews were then matched against age and training.

The final result consisted of three distinct products: an enriched description of five developmental types of aesthetic understanding; a refined manual for scoring aesthetic responses; and a preliminary test of reliability of the aesthetic scoring manual.

Aesthetic stage was measured by the Revised Scoring Manual with the following findings. Aesthetic stage varied significantly by age, with the highest stages appearing in middle adulthood. Aesthetic development also varied significantly by aesthetic exposure and socio-economic status. Aesthetic exposure has equally strong effects in different SES groups, and has the strongest overall impact on aesthetic development of any of the independent variables.
