Thesis (Ph.D.)--Harvard University, 2006.
Traditional neoclassical economic theory typically ignores the role of non-market (or social) interactions in explaining behavior. This thesis contributes to the growing literature on social interactions and economics and addresses two fundamental questions. Who do individuals choose to interact with, and how does participation in certain social activities, networks, and groups affect individual and group choices, beliefs, and outcomes? In the first chapter, I exploit the randomization of housing assignments at Harvard College to demonstrate the causal effect of spatial proximity on decisions to participate in social activities and social networks. Students assigned to houses isolated from the majority of other students and activities are less likely to participate in distant networks and activities. Instead, they substitute into local networks and activities. This substitution creates more dense social networks in the distant communities which in turn increases house satisfaction and improves the provision of local public goods in these houses. In the second chapter, I examine how participation in a social event---a college reunion---affects an individual decision---contributing to one's alma mater. The increase in alumni giving during reunion years is well documented; however, I show that nearly all the increase in giving during 5th and 10th reunion years by Harvard College alumni stems from increased giving by reunion attendees. Relative to their own giving behavior in non-reunion years, attendees increase their average contribution by approximately 20 percent. Non-attendees exhibit no change in giving behavior during reunion years. Finally, in the last chapter, I examine several myths and realities of American political geography. The division of America into red states and blue states misleadingly suggests that states are split into two camps, but along most dimensions, like political orientation, states are on a continuum. Despite the flaws of the red state/blue state framework, it does contain two profound truths---there is enormous heterogeneity in beliefs across the United States and political divisions are becoming increasingly religious and cultural. Religious political divisions are common because religious groups provide politicians the opportunity to send targeted messages that excite their base.
