This dissertation considers the impact of the Mexican War on anti-Catholicism in the United States. It explores Catholic and Protestant newspapers, letters, diaries and reminiscences left by U.S. soldiers who fought in the Mexican War, as well as official U.S. documents, in order to consider whether the war caused an increase or a diminution in anti-Catholic sentiment in the United States during the war years.Subjects--Topical Terms:

520 $a The dissertation consider the steps taken by the Polk Administration to discourage anti-Catholic feeling on the home front. For instance, President Polk appointed the first Roman Catholic chaplains to the U.S. military and encouraged Catholic immigrants to enlist for service during the war. He ordered his commanders in the field to show conspicuous respect for Catholicism south of the border. The dissertation looks at reactions, both positive and negative, to Catholicism in Mexico on the part of U.S. soldiers who served in the war. It also explores the impact of Catholic newspaper defenses of the faith within the United States and Protestant newspaper attacks on Catholicism which turned up during the war years.
520 $a The dissertation concludes that the Mexican War provided a number of pretexts for Protestant attacks on Catholicism. Yet the war also caused a demise in anti-Catholic sentiment within the United States, partly because it vindicated the patriotism of Catholic immigrant soldiers who fought for the United States, partly because it diverted public attention to other, more pressing preoccupations, and partly because it encouraged Americans to construe their differences with Mexico in nationalistic, rather than religious terms.
