Thesis (Ph.D.)--Temple University, 2006.
African-American women have been marginalized and excluded from substantive acknowledgment and equal recognition in Hip Hop cultural production and music. Where mentioned, they are most often peripherialized, marginalized, or spoken of as passive and acquiescent victims of misogyny and objectification. A significant part of Hip Hop history is absent in the current discourse. This story includes the contributions of women to Hip Hop cultural production and music and their resistance to misogyny, objectification, racism, and social marginalization. African-American women in Hip Hop cultural production and music have sustained legacies of resistance, resilience and protest.

Africana womanism grounded this research in which latent coding was used in the framework of Content Analysis to determine if there were strong, moderate, or weak correlations between Africana womanist qualifiers and the texts (i.e. Raps) of five female Hip Hop artists: Salt n' Pepa, MC Lyte, Queen Latifah, and Sister Souljah. If there were at least ten instances of at least one of the selected Africana Womanist qualifiers, a strong correlation was reported. If there were at least six instances of at least one of the selected Africana Womanist qualifiers, a moderate correlation was reported. If there were less than five instances of at least one of the selected Africana womanist qualifiers, a weak correlation was reported.

Strong correlations were found between the selected artists and Africana womanist qualifiers. African-American women were found to have co-created Hip Hop and to have sustained agency as activists and artists negotiating urban terrain.
