This study was designed compare the differences in self-concept and knowledge of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) between siblings of children with ASD who attended sibling support groups and siblings who did not. Participants consisted of 19 siblings of children with ASD, four of whom attended sibling support groups. Nineteen siblings of children developing typically were also included in the analyses. All siblings were between the ages of 8 and 12. Interviews were conducted in siblings' homes or in a location within the community. Measures of self-concept and knowledge of ASD were administered to each child. The data revealed no significant differences in sibling self-concept or knowledge of ASD between groups of siblings who attended support groups and those who did not. In addition, no significant differences were found between siblings of children with ASD and siblings developing typically on measures of self-concept. Implications of these findings for future research are discussed.
