Thesis (Ph.D.)--Loyola University Chicago, 2006.
This project is a qualitative study using interviews and participant observation in order to look at the concept of resilience as a process. Resilience, in this study, was defined as the ability to make normal, developmental achievements, despite obvious adverse social and environmental barriers (Rutter, 1987; Garmezy, 1993). Boyatzis' Thematic Analysis (Boyatzis, 1998) was used to explore the resilient experiences of six Mexican immigrants and five Cuban immigrants to the U.S. Eighty-five cases that met the criteria for resilience were explored. Results indicated several themes in each of the three main categories of Developmental Gains, Barriers and Resilience, which serve to help conceptualize the experiences of immigrants, as well as further define the components of resilience and how they interrelate.
