Children in families experiencing multiple environmental risk factors, such as low socioeconomic status (SES) are known to be at greater risk for poor developmental outcomes. Language development is a foundation upon which many other developmental skills are built, including academic, social, and cognitive functioning. Language delay, however, has been cited as the most common childhood disability, with overall prevalence rates ranging from 7% to 18%. While the prevalence of language delay among children experiencing environmental risk has not yet been identified, children experiencing multiple environmental risk factors are at increased risk for language deficits. The primary objectives of this study were to increase parents' use of language promoting strategies and Planned Activities Training (PAT), and consequently improve child communication outcomes among mothers and their young children experiencing multiple environmental risk factors. Six mothers and their children 9 to 35 months of age participated. The objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate whether parent implementation of an intervention package consisting of language promoting strategies and PAT results in increases in parents' use of these strategies with their young children, and (2) if parents' increased use of language promoting strategies and PAT results in increases in child communication. Improvements in parent use of language promoting strategies and PAT were observed from baseline to intervention and from intervention to follow-up. Further, overall levels of parent engagement increased. Improvements in the frequency of child communication were also observed.
