Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 were devastating for anyone affected, but pregnant women have concerns about exposures (such as infections, medications, chemicals, and stress) on their unborn child. The Organization of Teratology Information Specialists (OTIS) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) partnered to provide a specific hurricane-related service for women and their doctors describing the effects of exposures on pregnancy. There were three goals in this project: (1) identify concerns for pregnant women and create OTIS fact sheets; (2) enable the OTIS national toll-free routing system to accommodate questions regarding hurricane-related exposures; (3) publicize the OTIS national toll-free number as a resource for hurricane-related exposure information relating to pregnancy. The visibility of OTIS as a resource for information on pregnancy exposures appears to have increased greatly through the efforts of this project. This project represents a first-of-its-kind effort for OTIS to provide a national service in response to a public health emergency.
