The purpose of this study was to compare the physiological responses during incremental exercise using treadmill running and the Zero Gravity machine. Twelve healthy subjects (7 men and 5 women) completed two randomized submaximal graded exercise tests: one on the treadmill and one on the Zero Gravity machine on separate days. Physiological and psychological data were collected using a Parvomedics metabolic cart, Polar heart rate monitor and Borg's ratings of perceived exertion scale. Factorial ANOVA was performed to determine if there were any significant differences due to mode of exercise or heart rate interval in rating of perceived exertion (RPE), oxygen uptake (VO2), respiratory exchange ration (RER), energy expenditure (EE), percent carbohydrate utilized (CHO), or percent fat utilized (FAT), A subjective questionnaire was given at the end of the Zero Gravity test to assess personal preference. The results indicated that the Zero Gravity machine elicits physiological responses similar to treadmill exercise with the following exceptions. RPE was higher on the Zero Gravity at the same HR on the treadmill, VO2 was lower on the Zero Gravity, RER and the contribution from CHO was higher on the Zero Gravity. Subjectively, the participants reported that they liked and would use the Zero Gravity machine, but that several changes could be made to improve its design and usefulness. In conclusion, the Zero Gravity machine may prove to be a useful alternative mode of aerobic exercise.
