Ethnographic film, as previously conceived, is a withering niche that has lacked innovation and has lost appeal to the masses. Furthermore, within anthropology, it has grown only marginally as anthropologists continue to favor written ethnographic representations. For this and other reasons I will make a case that a broader definition of ethnographic film is necessary in order for the genre to appeal to broader audiences and for the genre to grow along with other similar genres within documentary filmmaking. This essay, therefore, sketches the history of ethnographic film and explores the role ethnographic film plays in independent film festivals today.
