Thesis (M.U.P.)--State University of New York at Buffalo, 2006.

This thesis is both general and site specific in its discussion of the modern high-rise office tower. This building type has been reviewed through a number of separate facets such as the technology that made it possible, how the centralization of cities became important, and what has happened since then to make this building type lose significance. A comparison of northeastern cities was made and a number of challenges facing this region and their central business districts were identified. Pittsburgh, Detroit, and Buffalo were reviewed in some detail and downtown living was established as something these cities were advocating in their soft downtown commercial real estate markets. A recent independent market study for downtown housing in the city of Buffalo was reviewed and from there a housing type and target market were selected. A specific modern office tower in downtown Buffalo was selected to illustrate the design challenges and feasibility concerns this building type faces when exploring a possible future use. Tentative conclusions and recommendations are made.
