Atomic population inversions are not required to obtain laser amplification. Entirely new laser systems may be constructed based upon this principle. This thesis discusses possible prototype lasers that operate without a population inversion. Related applications in nonlinear optics and optical switching are discussed. In all cases, systems are emphasized that demonstrate fundamental principles and requirements of these systems.

It has been shown by Mollow, Arkhipkin and Heller, Harris, and other workers that laser amplification is possible without an atomic population inversion. These systems require the external input of coherent energy to lase. Similar systems have been discovered that do not require any external coherent energy input. These systems can be shown to operate as "quantum heat engines". Because these systems have a small, finite number of atomic states, it can easily be shown that no atomic population inversion exists in any basis set; regardless of the presence of strong atomic coherences.

The cancellation of optical loss is closely related to this subject. In order to realize the small optical gains generated by these systems, normal loss mechanisms in atomic systems must be eliminated. Several quantum interference type schemes to cancel optical loss are discussed. By canceling the optical loss, it is shown that, in principle, the performance of certain types of devices and experiments may be dramatically improved. Examples for optical sum frequency generation, parametric oscillation, and observation of the vacuum-Rabi oscillation are given.
