Thesis (M.A.)--University of Guelph (Canada), 2006.
Soldier breakdown while in service during the First World War presented a challenge to the medical profession. Physicians tried to understand and manage this problem in the context of existing theory and practice. This thesis examines the existing theories and practices of mental medicine that were brought to bear in dealing with soldiers. It discusses the debate over the causes and proper management of the mental disorders soldiers developed and the changes in theory and practice that resulted from this debate. These men were in service when they became ill and were therefore the responsibility of the Canadian government. This thesis discusses the role of the war in focusing government and public attention on mental illness and the need to improve the care available to mentally ill soldiers and civilians.
