The purpose of the present research was to examine the characteristics of bullies within an inpatient adolescent hospital setting. The study examined bullying behavior and characteristics of psychiatrically hospitalized youth and aimed at expanding upon the existing understanding of the characteristics of bullies. Psychiatrically hospitalized youth were the target population for the study as the overt aggressive actions of adolescents are more apparent in such setting due to the actions requiring restraint or seclusion. Medical charts of 435 adolescents, psychiatrically hospitalized at a child/adolescent treatment facility between June 2003 and December 2003, were reviewed. Within this group, 78 adolescents were identified as bullies. The variables examined included age, history of physical/sexual/emotional abuse, neglect, history of substance abuse, number of previous hospitalizations, and history of involvement with DCFS. Of all variables examined, results indicated that females identified as bullies were more likely to have a history of involvement with DCFS, history of substance use, and an increased number of prior hospitalizations.
