This inquiry emerged from questioning why an Art Workshop at a summer camp for women and children living with HIV/AIDS was so effective. Over eight summers families participated in a summer program called the Healing Community. Their paintings and drawings provided an opportunity for self-expression that contributed to their well-being.

Searching for a theoretical aspect to explain why self-expression contributed to self-healing, the research of Dr. Herbert Benson and his construct of Remembered Wellness as a redefinition of the "placebo effect" was investigated. Dr. Dean Ornish and his research on love and intimacy was also reviewed and considered as a means of functioning as Remembered Wellness. Both Benson and Ornish have focused their attention on factors that affect the human heart, directly and spiritually.

Through the creation of a qualitative case study, the topic of art and healing was explored by studying the activities of two individuals, Kathy Mack and Christiane Corbat. They function as artists and facilitators with clients dealing with health crises. Through an elite case study procedure of interviews, the use of art materials, dialogue, expressive therapy approaches, and Shamanistic traditions were investigated as sources for using art as a healing force. These approaches were then reviewed through Benson's construct of Remembered Wellness and Ornish's research, plus other data, to provide a greater understanding of how art experiences play a role in the process of self-healing, and how this artistic phenomenon can be effectively incorporated into healthcare settings in the future.
