Recent trends, among academic institutions and accrediting bodies, include targeting assessment criteria to evaluate the delivery and content of literacy skills instruction. The four libraries of Delaware Tech undertook a pilot in the spring of 2003 to evaluate distance-learning delivery. The on-line tutorial, "TILT", an open license tutorial created by the University of Texas library was the focus for this pilot.

This study examines the ex post facto data from archived surveys created by the Wilmington and Stanton campus bibliographic librarians. The archived surveys were revisions of the yearly student surveys regarding library instruction and services, but revised to reflect the perceptions of students using the TILT modules.

The objective of this study is to determine if an on-line tutorial was an effective method of delivery for literacy skills instruction for students at Delaware Technical & Community College.
520

Students enrolled for all incoming first semester courses responded that the TILT tutorial was easy to use and helpful in finding materials in the library. The findings of this study follow national trends and demonstrate that first semester students at Delaware Technical and Community College feel that an on-line tutorial for literacy skills instruction is effective. This study also demonstrates the need for continuing experimentation in this area.
