A historical and introductory overview of fuel cells is presented. Primary focus is then given to the direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC). The principles that govern electrochemical behavior and microfluidics within the DMFC are discussed.

520 $a The governing fluid dynamic, chemical reaction and electrical charge concentration equations describing the environment within the DMFC are then reported. A one-phase model is derived and analyzed for the anode of the DMFC. Utilizing these equations a computer based numerical model of the DMFC system is also given. To further understand the numerical model a passive micro direct methanol fuel cell (PmuDMFC) is then developed and investigated. This numerical model is then compared to experimental results obtained from testing the PmuDMFC. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
