During World War II, the Japanese military institutionalized sexual slavery on a massive scale, ostensibly to prevent venereal disease and the resulting loss of fighting men. Approximately 200,000 Korean women, known as Comfort Women, were conscripted from Japan's pre-war colonies, and they were sent to the battlefields. To cope with the issue, Korean feminists gathered their power, and demand the Japanese government's official apology, legal compensation, and punishment of those responsible for the crime. This issue bonded not only Korean women, but also global women because the Comfort Women, Japanese military sexual slavery, is a symbol of gender, race, and class discrimination under imperialism, sexism, and racism. Without international cooperation intent upon protecting women's rights, the issue of Comfort Women would have remained a local women's issue, and war crimes against women's human rights would occur repeatedly in the world.
