This study was a qualitative exploration of how men experience intimacy and how the Relational-Cultural Model of development might apply to men. A pilot study was completed prior to this research project illuminating the prospect that the Relational Cultural model might be useful in examining men's relationships for the cultural influences of gender, power, and language paradigms. The research was based on the assumptions that gender is a central construct which influences the development of intimate relationships, subtle power differentials exist in a cultural paradigm for both sexes, and language can shift paradigms and create new meaning.

520 $a Seven participants volunteered to be part of this study. The participants were all Euro-American and 40 years of age or older. Each participant was interviewed twice and completed a Participant Information Sheet.
520 $a Three themes emerged from the analysis of the data: "The Nature of Men's Intimacy," "Challenges to Intimate Relationships," and "Influences on the Development of Intimacy." The results showed, for these men, that intimacy was important to relationships; especially the spousal relationship. Because intimacy seemed to get confounded as a euphemism for sex, examining male friendships became an interesting exploration. As a group, these men described intimacy outside of the spousal relationship as being a challenge in their lives. The central underlying explanation for this challenge emerged under the categories of "Gendered Image" and "Concepts of Masculinity." Cultural images and messages were described by the participants and appeared to influence their perception of what it means to be a man in relationships. Three of the participants found that sharing their inadequacies, insecurities, and weaknesses with others (i.e., spousal or friendship) increased their development and experience with intimacy.
520 $a It appeared that the development of intimacy was culturally experienced within the men's social context and family of origin which created social mechanisms and barriers to emotional expression in relationships. In addition, the development of intimacy in these men's lives seemed to be more recursive and circular than linear (e.g., stage developmental process) Recommendations for further research into how men experience intimacy, psychotherapists working with men, and training of psychotherapists are provided.
