The study aims to explore and restore the mediations of the German translators and interpreters of Shakespeare's Hamlet. The problems of translation, transference, imitation, nationhood, suicide, and revenge animate the textual and film materials under examination. The German reception ranges through the literary corpora of the Enlightenment, Classicism, Romanticism, to psychoanalysis, the largest body of reception of Hamlet, all the way to the screen. The majority of interpretations and translations privilege the paternal message of the ghost, which carries translatable knowledge common to different ages and languages, over and against the place of pain and separation that is the ghost's maternal and barely audible point of origin. On the manifest level of the message the different legacies (from Enlightenment to psychoanalysis and film) transfer the father's ghost to the circulation systems of our mass-mediatization, a process that began with Martin Luther's translation of the Bible. As institutions of mourning, however, the historical and technological stopovers and new beginnings, of which psychoanalysis and film are the latest installments, also afford, at a high point of self-reflexivity, a playground for the maternal legacy. These institutions of mourning are funded by what Johann Wolfgang Goethe found on this playground, the myth of the modern academic apparatus, Faust. Walter Benjamin's reading of Hamlet in terms of Trauerspiel or Baroque mourning play affords models and stations for the crossings of closure interpretations with the interminability of new beginnings vouchsafed by the allegorical perspective. The study excavates a certain "German" reception of Hamlet via Faust, which survives the delegation of suicide by turning to a translational dynamic of eternal mourning and recurrence.
